Stem Cell Therapy

About

Stem cell therapy is the most exciting addition to regenerative medicine. This innovative new field of medicine is dedicated to creating living, functional tissues to repair or replace tissue or organ function that has been lost due to damage, or congenital defects. A person’s own stem cells are obtained from bone marrow, fat, and blood (in various combinations or alone) and then injected into the area which has a cellular deficiency that is causing pain.

This therapy is aimed at creating joint regeneration and/or spine regeneration. It is a minor medical and surgical procedure and only takes about an hour. Stem cells have the ability to turn into healthy versions of the damaged cells that they encounter and contain growth factors as well as proteins that trigger the growth of new connective tissue and new blood vessels to allow healing to occur in the injured site.

Stem cells are helpful in relieving the pain and instability in the treated areas.
Conditions most commonly treated:

• Osteoarthritis

• Back pain

• Degenerated disks

• Stenosis

• Sciatica

• Neck Pain

• Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow

• Rotator cuff tears

• ACL tears

• Meniscus tears

• Ankle Sprains

• Achilles Tendinitis

• Hip Pain

• Plantar fasciitis

• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

• Bone Spurs

• Avascular Necrosis of the hip

Since this is a minimally invasive procedure, not much preparation is required. You health concerns should be previously discussed with the doctor to determine whether stem cell therapy is a suitable treatment for you. Make sure the doctor also has knowledge of all the medications you take. Anti-inflammatories like Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve and Naproxen are usually suspended at least one week before therapy. Staying hydrated is also of the essence. Abstain from alcohol and smoking since they both can be toxic to cells. Select a care advocate who is able to come with you on the day of the procedure and drive you home afterwards.

Either general or local anesthesia will be used depending on your doctor’s decision. The process of harvesting stem cells from the bone marrow is very similar to the one that harvests them from adipose tissue. In both of them a small incision is done at the place of extraction. The aspirated fluid is then centrifuged to separate the stem cells and injected back into the body by applying it directly to the area of pain.

Pain medications are often prescribed as the treated area may be feeling sore and painful immediately after treatment. However, these should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor. Cold therapy, rest and elevation are recommended for the first 48 hours. Resuming regular activities as tolerated is typically the way to reintegrate to your normal life.
